The MSI Analytical Lab is a shared-use facility for chemical analysis. It was established in 1977 by Dr. Bob Petty to provide UCSB marine scientists with state-of-the-art analytical instruments which might otherwise be difficult for individual researchers to obtain and/or maintain. The objective of the lab is to improve the efficiency and quality of current research efforts and to provide advanced research capabilities for new and expanded programs. The facility is now recognized nationally as a resource for high-quality analytical services, with a regular user base of over 40 faculty and professional researchers.
Use of the Analytical Lab is not restricted to MSI researchers, nor even to UC Santa Barbara investigators. Our customers include researchers, faculty, and graduate students from not only the UC Santa Barbara Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Science, Geography, Physics, and Engineering, but also off-campus institutions as Scripps Institute of Oceanography (UC San Diego), Monterey Bay Aquarium Reasearch Institute, UC Santa Cruz, Oregon State University, University of Chicago, University of Southern California, Bigelow Laboratories, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA), and the US Environmental Protection Agency. The University of California in general, and the MSI Analytical Lab in particular, does not compete with private sector providers for outside clients.
