Abstract

NOAA’s Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS), NOAA Fisheries, UCSC, and UCSB Bren have an opportunity for a summer graduate student intern to assist in a collaborative project addressing the intersection of ocean ecosystems, ocean access, and climate change for diverse and disadvantaged populations in southern and central California. The goal of this project is to help establish baseline information about ocean access and recreational fisheries - with a focus on subsistence fisheries - for coastal California, including the state’s marine protected area network and National Marine Sanctuaries (MPAs).

The graduate student fellow will support literature reviews about ocean access and subsistence fishing, and will assist with GIS mapping of fishing data and environmental justice indicators in relation to coastal access. The fellow will have the opportunity to support other projects as needed. The internship is based in Santa Barbara. We are a group of scientists working to support ocean conservation and management in California. We provide a supportive and inclusive work environment, with opportunities for developing research skills and learning more about management.
