The Santa Barbara Channel Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (SBC MBON) is a prototype project to track biodiversity of a broad suite of organisms from microbes to whales at large spatial scales. SBC MBON is doing this by integrating existing data on biodiversity and exploring advanced technologies to improve current observations. The ultimate goal is to develop a widely applicable model for expanding the MBON concept nationally and internationally. One of three such projects in the U.S., SBC MBON is supported by NASA, BOEM and NOAA and involves multiple partners including the Southern California Water Research Project (SCCWRP), Channel Islands National Park, Santa Barbara Coastal LTER, and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
