2002 Tessa M. Hill graduate student in the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Marine Science has received the Gretchen L. Blechschmidt Award for 2002 from the Geological Society of America.
2002 MSI Director Steven Gaines has been appointed as acting Vice-Chancellor of Research at UCSB.
2002 Dr. Jack Engle has been chosen by the Western Society of Naturalists as Naturalist of the Year. The award is given each year to an individual who has throughout their career devoted themselves to the study of Natural History and, especially, to an individual who has passed their knowledge and enthusiasm on to others. Summer 2003 David A. Hart has won the Discovery Channel's 2002 Young Scientist Challenge. Part of his award includes a trip to MSI in the summer of 2003.
Summer 2003 Miriam Polne-Fuller, research biologist at MSI, has received the first "Golden Anchor" award from the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum for her outstanding educational contributions and her years of dedication to the community.
2003 Dr. Steven Gaines, Director of the Marine Science Institute, has received a Pew Marine Conservation Fellowship. He is one of only five individuals selected this year to receive a Pew Marine Conservation Fellowship, the world's most prestigious award honoring and investing in applied ocean conservation science and outreach.
March, 2004 UCSB donates patent rights for novel use of heart drugs to combat global parasitic disease. UCSB reserch biologist Mark Walter and zoology professor Armand Kuris have found a way to control in vitro the parasite that causes shistosomiasis.
March, 2004 Internationally recognized ecologist and UCSB professor William W. Murdoch has been named this year's Faculty Research Lecturer, the highest honor bestowed by the university faculty.
2004 Dr. Roland Knapp wins the U.S. Forest Service's 2003 Excellence in Wilderness Stewardship Research Award.
