Research Experience and Education Facility (the REEF)

The REEF

The Research Experience & Education Facility, better known as The REEF, is UCSB's interactive aquarium facility. Part of the Marine Science Institute's (MSI) Oceans-to-Classrooms (O₂C) education and outreach program, The REEF is equipped with state-of-the-art touch tanks and aquaria, from 2 to 2,000 gallons. The REEF also utilizes a high-tech life support system for the Research Tank, which highlights current, on-going research at UCSB and the Marine Science Institute. There are over 100 different species of marine plants and animals housed at The REEF. REEF programs are designed to support CA State Science Education Standards and are developed in partnership with regional and local organizations including CINMS, COSEE and MARE. The facility is designed to provide visitors with a hands-on, inquiry-based experience into marine science and research here at UCSB. One of the REEF's greatest resources are the undergraduates who serve as marine science educators for our programs. Many have gone on to work at public aquaria and, more importantly, are now science teachers in local and state schools!

The Mobile REEF

The Mobile REEF brings the REEF K-12 program into the classroom --- provides a meaningful learning experience that integrates coastal marine science based on local watersheds with regional and global perspectives for students in Santa Barbara and Ventura County Schools and organizations; increases knowledge of specific habitats and ecosystems through hands-on learning experiences with plants and animals found in local watersheds and coastal systems; increases understanding of the scientific method and its application through hands-on, standards-based activities that are developed to utilize observation, investigation and critical thinking.

REEF Mentorship

This program supports 5-10 students, grades 8-12, with the opportunity to work alongside UCSB undergraduates to learn more about careers in marine and aquarium science at the REEF. Participants learn about research, animal husbandry, public speaking and the college experience.
