| Graduate Research Traineeships in Environmental Biology - Murdoch
Students are trained in two major disciplines. The first is ecology, and in particular they are trained in approaches aimed at understanding the dynamics of ecological systems, that is processes that cause temporal change. The second is geography, which in regard to natural systems has typically emphasized understanding spatial pattern. Thus, ecology students are trained in areas such as GIS, and geography students are exposed to dynamical theory in ecology. These are new areas for both types of students. Within ecology there has often been a separation between theoretical and experimental approaches. The program trains all students in both areas. Students in the program derive a wide array of benefits in addition to exposure to interdisciplinary training. The program has stimulated 5 new graduate courses, on several occasions at the request of the students. It supports a visiting speaker program, which the students run. Students receive a stipend that relieves them from teaching and other duties and substantial support for their research. They are encouraged to attend scientific meetings and are given support for this purpose. $140,000 have been spent on large items of equipment and a new computer lab. |
