| CODAR for Observation of Near-Surface Currents off South-Central California Coast - Washburn & Nishimoto
Mary Nishimoto and Libe Washburn have discovered that a previously little-known gyre in the Santa Barbara Channel appears to harbor extremely high densities of juvenile fishes. A gyre is similar to a very slow-moving whirlpool and this gyre may draw fishes and plankton from surrounding areas, entraining them inside. Of particular interest was Ms. Nishimoto's finding of very large numbers of juvenile rockfishes, a group that is of great economic and recreational importance. |
