Helene Scalliet
Recipient of the Audrey Lynn Copland Memorial Award 2001

Is this award significant for you?

Receiving this award meant a lot to me. Although I always strive to excel in my studies for myself rather than for outside approval, it is very encouraging to be recognized for my hard work. Also, I have understood that Audrey Lynn was a wonderful young woman who enjoyed life and her experience at UCSB. I am honored to have been awarded something in memory of her.

Did you work in someone’s lab as an undergrad and how may that have been of help to you?

I worked in Mark Brzezinski’s lab from the fall of my senior year until the following fall (this fall, 2001) (I am taking an extra quarter to graduate). The

work study program allowed me to work in the lab whenever my schedule permitted it. I found that to be the most invaluable experience that I have had in a university setting. I acquired a better understanding of what is involved in scientific research, and I met many interesting people who were more than willing to relate their story to help me think of different future opportunities. Moreover, I have been offered to stay as an employee after I graduate since my work was appreciated. It has been a learning experience, a stepping stone towards my future, a chance to meet many great people. Most of all, it’s been fun!

What are your goals and aspirations?

Right now, my goals and aspirations are not very defined. I have always been fascinated by the ocean and by how living things interact with their environment. Therefore, I am today mostly interested in ecology and oceanography. I plan to pursue graduate school in the future, but first I’d like to work in the marine science field to get a better understanding of how research is conducted, and to give myself a chance to find a topic I’d like to explore in depth as a graduate student.
