Project Site

The project site for the Marine Science Building faces the Pacific Ocean on the east side of the UCSB campus providing a broad view from the Channel Islands to the south and to the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north. Located on Lagoon Road, it lies between the Biological Sciences II Building and the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management. The proximity of the Marine Science Building to the Santa Barbara Channel will enable seawater to be pumped directly into the building's laboratories.

Building Plan

The Marine Science will be a wedge-shaped building measuring 160 feet by 160 feet. The east, south, and west wings will surround an open-air courtyard with dimensions of approximately 38 feet by 65 feet. The east and south wings will feature an auditorium and four floors of office space. The west wing will contain laboratories on the first three floors and administrative offices on the fourth floor.

The laboratories and some offices will house UCSB faculty and researchers (see MSI Research). Other offices will provide space for administrative and educational staff. Equipped with multimedia technology, the auditorium will host educational activities, community outreach programs, and scientific conferences.

The semi-enclosed courtyard in the center of the building will provide a convenient gathering space. The visibility among upper-level walkways and bridges will encourage chance meetings and informal interaction among members of different departments and disciplines.

A staircase from the courtyard to the second floor will lead to an open terrace atop the east wing, providing stunning views of the ocean and mountains.
